Dan Crenshaw Tries Again

We attended another lackluster Dan Crenshaw town hall on January 31, 2026. Rather than holding it in Kingwood, where a larger crowd could be accommodated, he chose a much smaller community center in Spring, Texas.

Our group organized to participate both inside and outside the venue. Some members attended the meeting inside, while others protested outside on public property. The outside group was clearly visible to everyone entering the building.

Outside, our protesters encountered law enforcement officers who attempted to move them to another part of the street, but they calmly stood their ground and exercised their First Amendment rights, following the guidance outlined in our protesting information and safety tips.

Within the first ten minutes, Crenshaw managed to frustrate many of his constituents. He repeatedly deflected questions about DHS and ICE, provoking growing anger throughout the audience. This pattern of deflection, gaslighting, and bravado continued for roughly 90 minutes, until he abruptly ended the meeting early and left.

What was especially striking was that our group was far from alone in its reaction. Nearly two-thirds of the room appeared fed up with his rhetoric and became increasingly vocal in their opposition.

We recorded the entire town hall and provided the footage to Egberto Willies for processing. He has since produced a compelling article, along with accompanying coverage on Substack and YouTube.

The protest was on a Saturday, and local TV station, KBTX, showed up at the end of the rally as we were packing up to depart. However, we stuck around long enough for the camera person to film and interview some participants. Apparently, MSNOW, Rachael Maddow, picked up the video on Monday evening!

Photos from the Ice Out Rally January 10, 2025

Photo credit: Christina P., Egberto Willies, Melinda B., Kingwood.com

In the wake of Renee Good’s death at the hand of an angry, uncontrolled, ICE agent, our community showed up!

Following are the rules that ICE agents are to follow:

1. Legal Authority & Limits

ICE agents operate under federal law, primarily:

U.S. Constitution (especially the 4th and 5th Amendments)

Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) – 8 U.S.C. §1101 et seq.

Federal criminal statutes (Title 18, U.S. Code)

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations

They do not have unlimited authority. Their actions must be legally justified and within scope.

2. Constitutional Requirements (Apply to ICE Like Any Law Enforcement)

Fourth Amendment – Searches & Seizures

ICE agents must:

Have probable cause or legal authorization to arrest or search

Obtain judicial warrants (issued by a judge), not just ICE “administrative warrants,” to:

Enter a private home without consent

Respect the right of individuals to refuse entry without a judicial warrant

Administrative ICE warrants do not authorize home entry.

Fifth Amendment – Due Process

ICE must:

Provide notice of proceedings

Allow access to legal counsel (at no government expense)

Avoid coercion, threats, or false statements

Respect the right to remain silent

3. Arrest Rules

ICE agents may arrest someone only if:

They have probable cause the person is removable or has committed a federal offense

The arrest complies with statutory authority (e.g., INA §287)

They must:

Identify themselves as law enforcement

Explain the reason for arrest

Use the least intrusive means necessary

4. Use-of-Force Rules

ICE officers are governed by DHS Use-of-Force Policy, which requires:

Force must be:

Necessary

Proportional

Reasonable

Deadly force may be used only when there is an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm

De-escalation is required when feasible

Use of force must be documented and reviewed

Retaliatory or punitive force is strictly prohibited.

5. Detention Standards

ICE detention is governed by:

ICE National Detention Standards (NDS)

Performance-Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS)

These require:

Access to medical and mental health care

Adequate food, water, and hygiene

Religious accommodation

Protection from abuse and retaliation

Reasonable access to attorneys and legal materials

6. Prohibited Conduct

ICE agents are explicitly prohibited from:

Using racial, ethnic, or religious profiling

Targeting people solely for First Amendment activity (protests, speech)

Making false statements about legal authority

Retaliating against individuals for filing complaints

Engaging in sexual misconduct or harassment

Destroying or falsifying records

7. Identification & Transparency

ICE agents are generally required to:

Identify themselves as federal officers

Display credentials upon request (when safe to do so)

Wear identifying markings when in uniformed operations

They are not allowed to impersonate other agencies or misrepresent their role.

8. Coordination With Local Law Enforcement

ICE:

Cannot compel local police to enforce immigration law unless a formal 287(g) agreement exists

Must respect local and state laws

Cannot override constitutional protections just because immigration enforcement is involved

9. Complaint & Oversight Mechanisms

ICE agents are subject to oversight by:

ICE Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR)

DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG)

Federal courts (civil and criminal liability)

Misconduct can result in:

Discipline

Termination

Civil liability

Criminal charges

10. Key Practical Takeaway

ICE agents are law enforcement—not above the law.
They must:

We are a small community near Houston, Texas. We believe Renee Good was murdered. Agent Ross was ready to shoot someone. We showed up over 130 strong to voice our outrage at this senseless killing.

Fox Channel 26 sent out a camera person to capture the rally. Ignore their calling us Be Aware Indivisible Kingwood. Apparently, they were confused after seeing a post warning the neighborhood about the protest.

Shortly after the election, a “friend” on Facebook posted that they would probably lose friends for saying they voted for Trump. One commenter stated that it was a shame that politics could come between friends.

These were my words in response:

You will not be losing friends over politics. The decision to sever a relationship, whether it is friend or family, is an extremely difficult, and many times, heartbreaking decision. Make no mistake, though, this has nothing to do with politics.

It has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who has no morals, no ethics, and no feelings or regards for anyone but himself.

It has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who has no respect for our military, who regards all wounded, POW, MIA, and KIA soldiers as LOSERS.

It has everything to do with your willingness to support a man:

–who feels that certain races and ethnicities are subhuman and have no rights to our liberties, even if they are American citizens; in other words, a racist and bigot.

–who thinks people with disabilities should just be left to die (ask his nephew)

–who is a homophobe and transphobe

–who thinks that it is OK to grope, rape, and molest a woman because he can, and did (and, according to him, deep down inside she loves it).

–who says “Hitler had some good ideas.”

–who admires Putin and calls him his good friend.

It has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who has given permission to send us back to the days of sheet-covered murderers whose goal was to “rid” our nation of what they considered to be undesireables: anyone who was not pure white. The difference is now there is no need to wear the hoods to hide their identity so no one would know who committed the atrocities. They are loud and proud with their hatred because their fuhrer has given his blessing.

This has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who created a lie about losing an election because his narcissism wouldn’t allow him to accept defeat, who preached this lie everyday, until Jan. 6, 2021, when as sitting President, he incited then directed an armed mob to march to the Capitol and do what it takes to stop the certification of votes. He said “I’ll be right there with you” then cowardly hid and watched it all unfold on TV for three hours as the police who were sworn to protect the Capitol were trampled and beaten as they screamed for help, as the out-of-control mob roamed the hallways of the Capitol yelling “hang Mike Pence,” as legislators and staff ran for their lives, before his staff and family were finally able to convince him he needed to do something. His response was to tell the insurrectionists to “stand down and stand by. You’re good people. We love you”. Do you remember how shocked you were that American citizens could be doing this, how appalled and disgusted you were with them AND him? Or maybe you were sitting in front of your TV cheering them on.

This has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who has vowed retribution against all who opposed him, mirroring the policies of Russia and other dictatorship countries.

This has everything to do with your willingness to support a man who believes he is “second only to Christ (his words); creating a cult who calls him “the 2nd coming; Jesus, ‘God’s chosen,’ the anointed David.” (The Jesus I have loved since childhood would NEVER commit the inhumanities this man sees as normal.)

Your willingness to support a sociopath may be the result of you not really understanding the consequences, or it may be because this is how you believe. I pray it is the first reason.

As I said, it has nothing to do with politics. Not surprisingly, this person unfriended and then blocked me.

Eleven strong today! Lots of honks and waves, a few downers, and one old coot said “I don’t carry a gun because of people like you.” Jeff and I both said, “What did you say?” He repeated then drove off. Interpret that as you wish. We just shook our heads and got back to the important task at hand.

One of our cohorts commented that she felt a change in the atmosphere, that our group seemed more spirited and excited to be there, that everyone was genuinely happy to see each other.

It was a good gathering! Thank you all.

We often get a few negative responses. Sometimes, we receive direct threats. This video captured a man who really wanted to stoke violence.

Not engaging is our go-to response. However, we now can capture these moments on our body cams.

I was about to step into a world I barely understood—a place where every word could be overheard, and every action watched. It was Mihai’s world, and I was its foreign visitor. Little did I know, the choices I would make in the coming week would echo the risks Mihai had taken years before to escape this same country.

I was once married to a man who had fled Romania in 1976. His story was extraordinary, almost cinematic, but I’ll save the full details for later. I was 18 when I met Mihai. My understanding of the Soviet Union and its satellites came almost entirely from textbooks: restrictions on speech, press, radio, and television; scarcity of food and goods; and the occasional images of bread lines. But textbooks didn’t tell me how people lived every day—under constant watch, constrained yet surviving.

After three years together, I decided to meet Mihai’s family in Romania. I was 21, nervous but determined. In Koblenz, friends helped me prepare. Ion assisted me in booking a “tour” through Neckermann Tours, departing from Hamburg to Constanța. On the plane, I realized I was the only passenger with a blue passport—a small difference that could attract attention I didn’t want.

The airline was Tarom. The plane looked like a secondhand Southwest Airlines jet: faded orange-and-brown upholstery and no passenger comforts. The food was mysterious. On the flight, I met a Lutheran minister traveling to Sibiu. His calm presence and perfect English were comforting. The stewardesses looked exhausted, drained by long hours and scarce resources.

Landing in Constanța, we took a bus to the hotel. Constanța was a cheap seaside destination for Germans, but for me, it felt tense and foreign. At the hotel, the clerk collected all our passports. Visitors weren’t allowed to keep them in Soviet countries. I handed mine over reluctantly, feeling the weight of being both guest and potential threat.

I had also brought a vaccine for the family dog, requiring refrigeration. To ensure it was stored properly, I slipped the clerk a carton of Kent cigarettes as bakshish. My room was small and damp, the smell of mold heavy. Towels were thin, toilet paper crinkly like crepe paper, furniture minimal: a twin bed, one small window, bare walls. I sank onto the bed, the chill seeping into me.

That evening, I walked along the beach. The Black Sea stretched before me, calm and vast. The wind carried salt and seaweed. Instead of peace, I felt isolation, aware of how far I was from home and how different this world was. Tomorrow, Mihai’s mother would arrive to take me to Bucharest, to meet his family—and to step into a past shaped by caution, fear, and resilience.

Mariana picked me up the next morning, and we drove 2.5 hours to Bucharest. The road was two lanes winding through fields and villages. We often stopped for horse-drawn carriages, drivers indifferent to the impatient cars. Miles of burned sunflower fields stretched across the landscape, left unharvested—a quiet act of resistance. The sky was pale, the wind stirring the stalks, whispering of hardship.

Mariana spoke no English, and my French was broken. Somehow, we communicated with her perfect French, my halting attempts, and countless gestures. We laughed over misunderstandings and pointed at passing scenery as if it could explain the world we were driving through.

When we arrived, I met Stefan, Mihai’s father, and Sofia, Mariana’s mother. Their house had belonged to the family, but after World War II, the government seized all private property and divided the house into three apartments. Mihai’s family lived on the second floor of the Bauhaus-designed building.

Inside, the radio and television were always on—a precaution. I was advised never to speak without them, as someone could be listening. It was illegal in the Romania to harbor a foreigner, and I was unmistakably one.

Sofia asked me for Tylenol, lipstick, and jewelry—things I had brought. Western items served as bribes to obtain food, a currency of survival in a flourishing black market economy. Mariana had shopped for two months to serve at least one meat dish per day.

The meat was stringy and tasteless, nothing like what we expected in the West. It might have ended up as pet food in the United States, but I never refused a meal. Gratitude outweighed hesitation.

During the week, we took several day trips, though I was forbidden to speak outside the home. One day, we visited the palace of former King Michael I, now the quarters of Nicolae Ceaușescu, President of the Socialist Republic of Romania (a dictator). Armed guards surrounded it, weapons at the ready. Standing there, I felt the weight of the regime—the tension and control permeating every corner of life.

We passed the U.S. Embassy, also heavily guarded. I didn’t have my passport, so I couldn’t enter. Longing and helplessness washed over me—so close to the symbol of my own country, yet completely cut off.

Another day, we traveled to Brașov in Transylvania, ringed by the Carpathians. Medieval villages dotted the countryside, many now tourist attractions. We had a grilled fish meal, fresh and simple, but I remained silent, careful not to speak outside the home.

Finally, the week ended. I packed my bag and items for Mihai: a hand-woven Romanian carpet, an antique mandolin, and letters. I knew it was illegal to take them out, but I carried the mandolin as if it were my own. A risk that may have resulted in my arrest.

At the airport, I saw the Lutheran minister again. We shared coffee while watching other Germans prepare to leave. One man foolishly took pictures inside. Armed guards rushed him, exposing all his film. Shock and fear surged through me, and I worried about the items in my bag.

At customs, the agent didn’t unpack everything. He questioned me about the mandolin, and I said it was mine. Thankfully, he didn’t ask me to play. Relief flooded through me—I had made it through, carrying more than gifts, carrying memories and stories I would never forget.

Chapter Two: Mihai’s Escape

It was Christmas Eve, 1976. Mihai had nothing but wrapped presents—and a plan that could cost land him in prison. He crossed into East Germany and took a train to Denmark, telling passport officials he was visiting family. Luck, timing, and, perhaps carelessness, worked in his favor: the officer had been drinking and didn’t verify his visa.

Denmark held him for thirty days, a temporary sanctuary. Then came the pressure: find a way to West Germany or face deportation. Through a friend, he obtained the necessary visa. From there, he found a sponsor in the U.S.—a Canadian citizen originally from Romania with business in Houston, Texas.

Entry into the United States required him to revoke Romanian citizenship. For ten years, he waited to become a naturalized citizen. Even after arrival, the shadow of his homeland lingered, a reminder of the risks he had taken to reach freedom.

Chapter Three: Reflection

Looking back on my week in Romania, I am struck not only by the courage and resilience I witnessed but also by how vividly it contrasts with the freedoms we are beginning to lose here at home. In America under Trump, I see the erosion of norms I once assumed were unshakable: attacks on the press, the undermining of truth, the dismissal of science, and the steady curtailing of civil liberties. The same vigilance and courage I saw in Mihai’s family—small acts of resistance, careful navigation of rules—feel suddenly necessary here as well.

Mihai escaped Romania to live in a country where freedom was real, even if fragile. Yet today, I watch as rights we took for granted—freedom of speech, the right to protest, access to fair and impartial justice—are challenged, eroded, or dismissed outright. The slow, insidious nature of these losses is striking: like the burned sunflower fields I saw in Romania, resistance and survival require patience, awareness, and courage.

My time in Romania reminded me that liberty is hard-won and easily taken for granted. It is not guaranteed by law alone, but by the choices of citizens, by those willing to speak out, organize, and resist abuses of power. We may not face armed guards or secret police at every corner, but the erosion of institutions, norms, and protections under Trump is a warning: freedom must be actively defended, or it can disappear quietly, one law, one decree, one assault on the truth at a time.

Mihai’s journey, his courage, and his family’s quiet heroism illuminate a path forward for us in America: vigilance, community, and moral courage are essential. The story of his escape and the resilience I witnessed are not just memories—they are a call to action, a reminder that liberty requires constant defense. What we risk losing now is precious, and the time to act is before those freedoms are gone.

Lies, Obfuscation, Deflection, Trump Bootlicking, and Republican Propaganda at Fake Town Hall

https://egberto.substack.com/p/congressman-dan-crenshaw-kingwood

Egberto’s write-up captures the moment perfectly. Apparently, the dissenters rattled Crenshaw and his sycophants, prompting him to post a “making lemonade” diatribe on his congressional Facebook page:

We organized a small group of constituents armed with red and green cards—red for disagreement, green for agreement. The cards caught Crenshaw off guard. We weren’t alone in our frustration; others in the crowd eagerly grabbed red cards and voiced their disapproval.

Most of Crenshaw’s remarks were recycled talking points—straight from his newsletter and website. There was no genuine dialogue with constituents. And frankly, he is a weak public speaker.

We had curated 11 substantive questions in advance. At first, we were told they had to be submitted on index cards. Later, Crenshaw’s team claimed they would take questions from the floor. We prepared for both—cards and hard copies in hand. Despite this, he dodged real engagement. He waited until the end to take just four questions.

I asked one of his staffers (the woman in the blue dress) why he was ignoring our questions and showed her the list. She responded, “There are multiple copies of these questions. You must have emailed them to people.”
DUH. Of course we did—they mattered to everyone in the room. Her blank stare said it all: they were not prepared for us.

In the end, Crenshaw avoided the “hard” questions—especially on Medicaid and the implementation of the Big, Bad Bill.

Our Unanswered Questions

Medicare cuts: You’ve supported budgets that reduce Medicare spending via PayGo and other mechanisms. How are Texas seniors on fixed incomes supposed to absorb higher out-of-pocket costs?

Medicare Advantage: Taxpayers subsidize it heavily, it costs more per patient than traditional Medicare, and it’s riddled with denials and fraud. Why push Medicare Advantage instead of protecting and expanding traditional Medicare?

Medicaid expansion: Over a million Texans remain uninsured because Texas refuses to expand Medicaid. Do you support expansion, or do you think working-class Texans should keep being denied basic healthcare?

Rural hospitals: Texas leads the nation in rural hospital closures, often due to low Medicaid reimbursement and lack of expansion. Beyond slogans, what’s your plan to keep rural Texans from driving hours for emergency care?

Eligibility age: Life expectancy is falling for some Americans due to poverty and poor access to care. Should working-class Americans who paid into the system their whole lives have to wait longer for Medicare benefits?

Checks and balances: Militarizing the streets, threatening free speech, undermining state authority, and intimidating universities are hallmarks of authoritarian rule. Why has your party abandoned its Article I responsibilities?

Voting rights: Mail-in ballots are statistically secure. With the President ruling by executive order, how will you ensure free and fair elections in 2026?

Tariffs: Ever-changing tariffs are driving up costs and disrupting trade. Tariffs fall under Congressional control. Why haven’t you and your party acted?

Erosion of democracy: From gerrymandering to martial law threats to restricting 1st Amendment rights, we’re sliding toward authoritarianism. Why are you and your party abdicating your duty to the Constitution?

Epstein files: Why don’t you support releasing the full, unredacted Epstein files so perpetrators of child rape and trafficking—regardless of party—can face justice?

Public health: RFK Jr.’s dangerous vaccine skepticism, coupled with restricting access to Covid vaccines, has triggered resignations at the CDC and threatens public health. Why aren’t you supporting his impeachment as Secretary of HHS?

How prisons become stages when the powerful fall from grace

A Visit to the Prison

On August 19, 2025, we took a drive out to the prison where Ghislaine Maxwell is now serving her sentence. On the surface, it was just another correctional facility tucked away from public view. But standing there, it felt like more than a prison — it felt like a stage. A stage built to reassure the public that justice had been done, while at the same time hiding the deeper realities of who really gets punished in America, and who doesn’t.

The Illusion of Respectability

From the front entrance, the prison almost looks respectable. A neatly kept wrought iron fence frames the property, free of razor wire or obvious signs of unfriendliness. If you only saw that side, you might think of it as just another government building, bland and orderly, nothing to raise suspicion. But if you drive around the perimeter, the illusion cracks. There, the chain-link fences rise high, laced with razor wire and draped in black privacy screens. It’s the kind of fortification you’d expect around a military base, not a facility still labeled “minimum security.” The front projects legitimacy. The sides and back scream secrecy and control.

A Neighborhood Without a Voice

One of the neighbors we spoke with confirmed what we suspected. The razor wire and privacy screens weren’t always there. “They put all that up right before she got transferred here,” he said.

That same neighbor told us something else that stuck with me: when the government first turned this former school into a federal prison, the community wasn’t consulted. No meetings, no hearings, no chance for input. The Bryan City Council never gave the neighborhood a voice. Instead, the facility was dropped right into the middle of a predominantly Black and Hispanic, working-class community. The man we spoke with lives directly across the street — maybe twenty feet from the gates. Imagine walking out your front door every morning to the sight of barbed wire and black privacy screens, armed guards patrolling where kids once went to class.

For the people who live here, Maxwell’s presence isn’t just a headline or a courtroom drama. It’s an everyday reality of militarization, surveillance, and stigma, imposed without consent.

The Occupation Outside the Walls

The disruption doesn’t stop at the fence line. The so-called guards — or goons — patrol the neighborhood itself, rolling through the streets at all hours of the day and night.

Their presence isn’t just visible, it’s invasive. When we took a picture of one goon, he followed us for blocks, long enough to make it clear that he had probably run our license plate.

It’s the kind of intimidation tactic you’d expect in a police state, not a residential neighborhood.

For the people who live here, this isn’t just about a prison across the street. It’s about being watched, shadowed, and unsettled in your own community.

It doesn’t just feel like incarceration for those inside the walls — it feels like a low-level occupation for those outside them.

The Guards Who Aren’t Guards

And then there were the guards stationed at the prison itself. They weren’t in the khakis and polos you’d expect from federal prison staff. Instead, they looked more like ICE patrol: outfitted in heavy tactical gear, carrying military-grade weapons, and conspicuously lacking any visible badges or identification.

They weren’t there to be recognized. They were there to project force.

Standing outside the fence line, I had the uneasy sense that we weren’t just looking at a prison — we were looking at a stage-managed show of control, built less to contain one notorious inmate than to keep the public at bay.

Theater, Not Justice

The whole setup felt less like justice in action and more like theater. The razor wire, the privacy screens, the tactical guards with no names — it all sent a message, but not the one the Bureau of Prisons probably intended.

This wasn’t about accountability. It was about optics. About projecting control, about reassuring the public that someone like Maxwell can’t slip through the cracks, and about insulating the system itself from scrutiny.

Because here’s the truth: prisons in America don’t transform like this for ordinary people. They don’t build new fences and bring in black-clad tactical teams for a shoplifter, or a drug possession charge, or the countless poor people who cycle in and out of these facilities every day. That kind of security theater is reserved for high-profile cases — cases where the government’s reputation is on trial as much as the individual inmate.

And that’s the irony. Maxwell may be behind bars, but the machinery that enabled her — the billionaires, the power brokers, the culture of wealth and impunity — remains untouched.

It’s a performance designed to convince us the system works, while the real graft goes unpunished — the corruption that ties wealth, politics, and power together in ways a prison sentence can’t touch.
